Curious to know what links mathematics and ecology, and how they can help advance environmental research and our understanding of people-nature connections? Join us in-person or online for this exciting talk by Dr Siddharth Kumar who will be rethinking the environmental role of mathematics and its use in corresponding with the natural world.

23 September 2024, 11:00-12:30, hybrid

Location: Online via Microsoft Teams or in-person in the Trevithick Room, Environmental and Sustainability Institute (ESI), University of Exeter Penryn Campus, Penryn, Cornwall, TR10 9FE

Mathematics plays a fundamental role in climate and biodiversity research. However, its uses remain largely separate from advances in environmental thought, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. By drawing on ecological perspectives across and beyond academic disciplines, can mathematics grow into a richer and more nuanced relationship with the natural world?

In this talk, we begin exploring this question by looking at the historical development of mathematical ideas in ecology. We then turn to the mathematical practices of different cultures, in order to rethink the relationship between abstract and bodily knowledge, the reciprocity of language and perception, and questions of time and space in nature.

Dr Kumar is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working on the Environmental Intelligence theme of RENEW.

Jointly hosted by the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) at the University of Exeter and the RENEW Partner Forum, this event is open to all Penryn/Exeter colleagues and students and RENEW partners. The event is hybrid, with options to join in-person or online.

The registration link will be circulated via email. If you would like to attend, but have not yet received registration details, please email renew@exeter.ac.uk
